Tolkien has a variety of framers for his stories. Tom Bombadil, the ancient of days, is known by the dwarves as foreign. He was who was there as he himself, Bombadil describes when the first acorn was made. The fiction that we think of as fiction is the real stuff. We are enchanted to be inside the story.
