The Importance of Ethics in Speculative Methods

Ethics is something that comes up a whole bunch in this book. As you say, not just in relation to research but also teaching as well so working with students produces a whole different set of ethical issues. There are really like established ethical principles that hold for speculative approaches there's no question about that like informed consent. But even that really foundational principle of work with participants really requires thought because if no one quite knows what might be generated through speculative methods or a speculative encounter then consent is a sort of interesting concept right and then I think there's this question of balancing risk and responsibility. And that's really critical along with how researchers and educators respond to unintended consequences.
