How to Start a Patient on Lithium

Stefan's lithium is stopped for 24 to 48 hours and then restarted at a lower dose during his admission. As an outpatient, Stefan's lithium levels are steady. In the long term, side effects include weight gain, polyurea, endocrine effects such as hypothyroidism and hyperparathyroidism.
