China's New Security Initiatives in the Aftermath of COVID

The contest between China and India for who really is the leader of the global South remains one of this year's most intriguing sub themes, especially given India G20. In Southeast Asia, only really Singapore has done much of what the West was hoping other countries would do in terms of condemning the invasion and introducing sanctions. If you go and talk to people in Indonesia or Malaysia or Vietnam, they're much more equivocal about what's going on in Ukraine. And so the West has, I think, would recognize that it has a kind of problem with the global South. Both China and India see themselves as natural leaders of the world's emerging economies.
