Ben Smith called his own autopsy the end of the BuzzFeed era of news. He pins a lot of the blame on really the pivot to social media and social platforms. The most important thing that BuzzFeed news established was just the whole idea of very tech aware journalists who are serious about reporting, but also eager to incorporate them into their journalism.
