John K. was the son of a yeoman farmer and grew up in northern England. He became apprenticed to a maker of reeds for hand looms, machines for fabric threading. The 29-year-old tradesman received a patent for his flying shuttle in 1733. Like the Industrial Revolutions, the Manchester we know today is the product of a cotton industry that K catalyzed.
