At first, when Kathy joins the No Tech household, she's a loving, brassy, joyful woman. The honeymoon period doesn't last long and soon Shelly's backed her old ways. 13 year old Shane is subjected to increasingly terrible abuse from his aunt. So it's completely fake. She does not have cancer and she's actually very bad at faking that she has cancer.
