Rishi Agrawal: India has this notion of gurus and followers social media, which is specific. He says TikTok provided a platform for people to express themselves on the internet. This created what sociologist Timur Quran calls preference cascades where people who otherwise did not know that there are others like them or that a certain kind of self-expression was possible. A lot of this happened before TikTok got banned but all these people who did not have a voice had a voice now he adds.
