The Development of Contemporary Art in Nigeria

Before the colonial encounter between Africa and Europe, South Sahara was home to a rich traditional art culture that served both religious and secular functions. However, the colonial encounter led with the efficient of Western modernist aesthetics into South Sahara, Africa. And at that time, we have the artist in Nigeria, the modernist in Nigeria, fighting themselves at a time where there is a struggle for the colonization. Then they find that at artists, we can contribute into this struggle through our art. So it was not the art market kind of inspired the contemporary art in Nigeria, but rather the struggle for the Colonization.
