The Evolution of Cognition
The ability to detect and respond to danger is as whole as life, but fear may be a much more recent addition. We've come to associate the amygdala with fear because of behavioral responses which sort of hoodwink us into thinking that the feelings must be there too. With mammals, we do get more complicated forms of cognition. But I think the amygdala example of fear gives us some reason to be cautious about that.
