After the romans left, there was a period of peace and quiet for britons. But then saxon civilization pushed into somerset around 700 years later. The southwest became cornish because they didn't like how things looked. They decided to go across the sea and set up what is now brittany. That's why the language in brittany is so similar to cornish - it is the daughter language of cornish.
