Christopher Columbus was deeply influenced by a kind of Spanish Franciscan emphasis on apocalypticism. He saw himself as the bearer of Christ to other parts of the globe, which he believed within convert to Christianity. And I believe that not only he but many of the missionaries who went to the Americas into Asia were driven by the notion that they could help accelerate the end times. This brought about actually sort of mass anxiety for a lot of people and you see the arrival of what we now consider quite clear neuroses in a way.
