The Distributed Idea Suspension Complex
I think Eric Weinstein has a good coinage on this where he calls it the disc, the distributed idea suppression complex. So you see the mechanism in action, but why is it acting? And as you say, it didn't require an order from on high. These people saw it and knew they had a part to play because really what this is going back to the religious metaphor, it's a crusade. They are on a crusade to bring about the progressive paradise on earth. This is sincere true belief. It's so important that all of the other beliefs that they think of integrity, justice, decency, all of these things are out of the window. The end is totally justified. And
