CHAPTER

The Challenges to Long Termism

Long termism is the view that what we ought to do in most choice situations, is mainly determined by the effects of our actionsn the very far future. As we look further and further into the future, it gets harder and harder to predict not just what the future will look like, but what the effects ofour present actions or interventions will be. But if we can plausibly have predictable effects on the very long run future, then humanity has at least a non trivial chance of persisting for many thousands of years,. mayben billions of years. If don't survive the next century, it's very plausible that no civilization is going to exist on earth - maybe even for all time.
