The advantage of a tippet ring is you can go from a fairly heavy piece of monofilament or fluorocarbon to a fairly light one just by tying clinch knots. For dry flies, you don't want to go for too much variation in diameters. But if you're tightline nymphing or fishing with an indicator where you really don't care as much how that how that straightens and how the whole leader lays out then it's OK.
