The Eucharist Is the Crucifixion of the Passion of Christ
For saint thomas, faith in the passion of christ is necessary for salvation. Christ himself established the eucharist as a memorial of his passion and death to be the chief sacrament of the new covenant. The wine is consecrated separately from the bread so we have a kind of visible reminder of the passion of the lord. We see in the eucharistic elements christ the victim. And he offered himself as both priest and victim on the cross.
