Introduction
When the prophet Muhammad died in 632, it was not entirely clear who should succeed him. The question of political legitimacy was compounded by a problem of religious authority. Who could be trusted to extrapolate from the Quran to settle issues not addressed explicitly in the revelation itself? These questions would dominate much of the history of Islam and lead to the fundamental division between Sunnis and Shiites.
