People value items more when they see the work that goes into them. Holmes chose to show all the work that went into the Edison even if that work was largely bogus. The labour illusion is one thing, but it's not the only bias they took advantage of on their site. Scrolling back through the years, you can see how the site changes over time. And in 2016, they went with a very different approach and it's fairly striking because it's fairly different from most other style of websites that you'll see. In this version of the site, they featured people, not the product. Now, knowing what we now know, it is clear that this image is BS. But yet
