The Role of Differentiation in Black Caribbean Identity in London and New York City

There are three dominant cultural strategies that shape the cultural logics that I saw at work in both London and New York City. The first is distinctiveness, the idea of being different from and in some cases better than a more stigmatized group. The second is deference, this belief that good behavior and comportment will shape high achievement and success. And the last is defiance, an attempt at pushing back against structures of inequality that they may censor experience in school.
