How Do You Know if You've Run Out of Fuel?
Before this change, each individual tank gauge displayed five digits. United airlines made the change in order to fix errors caused by wiring and interference from other systems. It may be possible the crew could have interpreted the numbers incorrectly based on what display they were looking at. The nt s b recognizes that fuel gauge issue might have contributed to the crews confusion towards the end of the flight. They do phasize that the captains should never have allowed such a situation to develop in the first place.
