The Instinct of Self-Flagellation in Evangelicals
There is an instinct among a certain type of evangelical to constantly want to self-flagellate. It's sort of implicitly saying, thank God that I'm not like these other evangelicals. If we just could beat ourselves up hard enough, then things would get better. So if there's an explanation, and I guess in a way it is a self-absorption.
