The Origins of Genocide in Cambodia
Before the Khmer Rouge era, genocide was associated with attacks on disfavored minorities. The vast majority of victims in this case were members of the majority ethno-religious group. It raises the question whether this legally could be referred to as a genocide. In our public conversations about Cambodia, we almost always refer to it as the Cambodian genocide.
