The S&P 500 is up more than 47,000%. While gold is up only 9,500%. This excludes dividends. If you reinvested the dividends during that time, the reason I did not include it for the hundred year period is because the data is just not as accurate prior to 1977. But let's be honest, I think very few people would be able to hold assets for that long period of time even if they're long-term investors.
