The forty five degree principle is kind of what you use as you're your entering into one of the levels of the guards. The ultimate expression of preventing rotation of the shoulders is to then have the shoulders pinned. Once the shoulders are pinned, then lookt a false rotation in the hips. A kia kene gives you a direction to make sure that you're not forgetting that it's a full body fight.
