Teaching Literature Without a Curriculum

When we go from picture book to novel, we're actually taking a step down in complexity of language. So there's nothing that a novel can give your kids that a picture book can't. There are some picture books that are not only best for high school. I mean, i would never read them with leno, let's say, a six or seven year old. Some of those are on our list for the high schoolers but they might be set during a really difficult time in history. They're beautifully done.
