Aircraft Accident Investigation - The Fuel Never Frozen
Ice was likely to have formed from water that occurred naturally in the fuel. Water can exist as an impurity in jet fuel up to around a hundred parts per million. Ice began to adhere inside the fuel lines, but it didn't have an effect until their approach into heathrow. As theyr descending, coming down, the temperature began to rise and started to melt the ice and release it back into the fuel which formed a slush. And this slush flowed up through the fuel line into the fuel oil heat exchanger, and then froze again, causing a restriction in fuel flow.
