The Importance of Mechanization in China
The majority of China at this time was agriculture, rural production. When you have a large population, you need to be a majority agriculture. But they didn't technically necessarily need food as of yet for it. It's the reverse of what you see today. They definitely do not produce the food to feed their own population.
