Great Mysteries of Physics

CHAPTER

The Importance of Chemistry in the Universe

Chemistry is important because without it, there would be no elements or reactions. If the electron mass weren't much smaller than the proton mass, we couldn't have stable ordered structures such as living cells. Neither could we have stable stars that lived for long enough to allow life to evolve. There's a similar balance between the force of electromagnetism and that of gravity. Because gravity is so weak in comparison to the electromagnetic force, this ratio is huge at 10 to the power of 40. Another mystery is why we experience only three dimensions of space, depth, height and width.
