Gersonides sees himself in book six as bringing together both the rabbinic strand and the philosophical strand. He uses both the, as you rightly point out, there is a long rabbinical tradition of reading the first verses in Genesis as supporting an eternity model. And so I think this is the sort of model that Gersonides has in mind.
