Integrated information theory says that what consciousness is is essentially complexity. So it's a particular kind of complexity, right? Because a civilization might be extremely complex but not conscious as a whole. A person is. And the more differentiated an entity is that can be integrated in this way, the more conscious it is. But then there's the question about the nature of it.
