Professor Wallace believes that local politics might have a role in why China's GDP figures could on an ongoing basis appear a little bloated. "We do know from cross national analysis that dictatorships tend to distort data or try to present rosy or GDP numbers," he says. Dr Linda Yu, an author and economist at Oxford University who may also ran all of this past, agreed that provincial data might be overreported due to the enormous pressures heaped on local leaders.
