The History of the Chapter Inverse Designations in the Bible
The Bible has been divided into chapters from time immemorial. The first chapter divisions were added by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1158 AD. Over time, a variety of different schemes for verse divisions were tried. One that Robert S. D. N. introduced in 1551 eventually became the standard used by publishers today.
