The Glass Bead Game

The glass bead game begins as a series of tentative experiments involving actual glass beads, but then increasingly becomes more abstract. It's described very much as a culture coming to its senses after a brutal and rationalistic time. And that might remind us, actually, of the response of a lot of german speaking intellectuals, artists coming out of the knotsy period. i'm thinking particularly of a composer, paul hindemut, who composed a series of madricals in his modernist, in very apollonian style.
