The Essence of Matter
Being cannot be ascribed to matter, which derives its being from the intelligible. Being is not a genus whose species is matter, form, and the combination. Essences differ according to participation in form. The anterior being possesses a better nature, essence, than any posterior being. Life has different degrees, one stronger the other weaker; images of same object are some more lively, others more obscure.
