The Importance of Additionality in Energy Production

If you plug your electrolyzer into the grid and specifically consume renewable energy from the grid, you're not necessarily using clean energy. You have to support new clean supply or additionality. This means that technically all existing nuclear generator in the US can sell their credits for hydrogen production. There is enough nuclear generation to supply enough nuclear credits to dwarf even a high estimate of hydrogen production between now and 2030. Hydrogen electrolyzers could pluck to the grid, do absolutely nothing. Draw on grid power, have high emissions, and purchase these cheap nuclear credits without really doing anything to the grids to net out their emissions.
