The 95 theses were written by a german priest, Martin Luther. The pope tried to arrest him and try him as a heretic in Rome. But luther became so popular that he was made a martyr for his beliefs. Now it is clear 'the war between the church and luther was a war to the death', writes Julian Zelizer.
