The Importance of Rotation in Single Leg Squats

I hate to generalize, but you mentioned the population that doesn't do well with the pistol squat. And actually it is funny. I've kind of gone through the years just towards more if the single leg stuff that I do a lot is more skater squats. So one of the reasons why you may find that it's better for you to do your single leg squat to a bench is because it keeps you able to access that internal rotation at the knee. It's instantly more comfortable. You feel yourself being more capable of applying that force in the ground.
