Sayers and Lewis's friendship evolved from professional colleagues to close friends in their 15-year correspondence. Among their many literary discussions were letters about their shared fascination with Dante's divine comedy. In 1943, Sayers read a book on Dante written by Lewis's friend and fellow inkling Charles Williams.
