Sayers and Lewis's friendship evolved from professional colleagues to close friends in their 15-year correspondence. Among their many literary discussions were letters about their shared fascination with Dante's divine comedy. In 1943, Sayers read a book on Dante written by Lewis's friend and fellow inkling Charles Williams. The epic Italian palm in which the narrator is guided through nine circles of hell, the inferno, then up to seven levels of the mountain of purgatory. And finally, up through the nine spheres of paradise.
