The Instinct to Think Well of a Tough Person

Sometimes there's this instinct, whether it's our perception or how things are presented to us, some grizzled old man from a bygone era to be looked at with a certain amount of respect. But that toughness doesn't equate to niceness or fairness necessarily. Maybe sometimes the tough person understands better someone else's struggle and is more willing to help them. Sometimes that tough person like thinks less of you for not being as tough as they are.
