By 19 ten, there wer over 20 thousand fish and chip shops around the uk. And during world war one, the prime minister tried to boost moral by keeping shops open. Fish and chips became such a part of british culture that when the british soldiers stormed beaches in normandy in word war too, they reportedly called out to each other by shouting fish. This helped them find each other in the chaos of battle.
