Feminist History - Elizabeth Bisley Boy

The Bisley Boy story appears for the first time in 1910 in a book by Bram Stoker. The gossip there was about Elizabeth all had to do with her being sexually promiscuous and not as she claimed a virgin. Even if a society would accept a female leader, they simply could not have her acting too womanly. In this context, Elizabeth's need to appear masculine seems less like a clue about a hidden life as a transgendered person and more of a symptom of a male dominated society that was deeply uncomfortable with women having power.
