The Bible Doesn't Defend Slavery
Skeptics say the Old Testament defends slavery, but it's not what you think. The Bible forbids kidnapping of people and forbids their sale in Exodus 21 verse 16. There was a form of contract slavery, right? Endentured servitude. Once you signed up for it and it was voluntary, that type of slavery was voluntary throughout the ancient Near East.
