Inclusion experts tell you what's the proper judgment to make. If there's any element of racism, sexism, whatever, anything, then it trashes it. So as far as there's any great American novel, it's usually either said to be Moby Dick or Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn. A lot of cancel culture just rules that out, out of hand, assuming that everyone else is able to do it.
