The Tension Between Thatcher and Peel

Margaret Thatcher was keen on the idea of positioning herself as a conviction politician that she had principles. The Wets, who had her principal opposition within the Conservative Party when she first became Prime Minister, didn't have convictions and they were willing to accept Labour's terms. I think actually she was a much more canny politician. And part of the canny-ness was to realise that there was value in presenting herself as aconviction politician and the Conservative Party standing for a set of principles. In practice being much, much more pragmatic than that.
