I think that it's important not to exaggerate the level of impact, but I don't think it's an accident. Christianity and Islam both have periods of trying to pull the brakes on violence in a way that Roman paganism is just not interested in. The Romans don't understand there to be noncombatants. Rome does not declare war on a country. It declares war on a people.
