The Importance of Local and Regional Voices
I am 100% committed to the local and regional voices. The national body has some important work to do, but it doesn't have oodles and oodles of work to do because I think people misunderstand this. In 1967, at the referendum that we passed by 90%, it's amazing to think you could get 90% for anything today,. We gave the Commonwealth power to make laws about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. But the truth is, although the Commonwealth has the power to make any law at once about any aspect of the live Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, there's actually very few laws that have made and very few programs that are run by the Commonwealth
