The History of Flora Danica

Flora Danica was a Danish Enlightenment project, published between 1761 and 1883. The intention behind it was to find out what kinds of plans were available that could be practically used in agriculture or medicine. Copies of the herbarium were given to bishops around the countryside for lay people to learn something from. So it really is an early example of citizen science. It became part of Danish science diplomacy. And when I did research for my book, I found that the Flora Danica offers insights into how human knowledge and creativity are advanced.
