The Emancipation Proclamation of Lincoln

The Emancipation Proclamation is very divisive, even among his own people. Lincoln softens it and says he's not going to proclaim for all enslaved people only for the people held in the southern states. The proclamation alters the course of the war, where the Union forces had been fighting to preserve the power of the federal government. Now it is on a moral crusade to free the slaves. As well as giving the Union forces a moral urgency, it undermines support from abroad for the Confederate cause.
