Some accounts from captives later seem to contradict this whole policy. Adultery is still a crime in 23 states, mostly a misdemeanor, but I think there's some states where it's technically a felony. The most famous captive due to his diary that was later published was a man named Richard Glasspool. He provides us one of the only two primary sources from this time.
