401k is kind of weird, but what that basically means is that that money you put in gets deducted from your US federal income tax obligation. So it's as if you made less money as far as the IRS is concerned. And then later when you take that money out at retirement age, you have to pay taxes on it at whatever the current tax rate is. There's all kinds of arcane logic around. You can also do where you do pay tax upfront. That's called a Roth 401k. And then it's you're kind of betting like will taxes go up or down? Yep. Exactly.
